Dongni Hou

Dongni Hou was born in 1987 in Fuxin, in the Chinese province of Liaoning. After studying graphic arts from a very young age, she joined the famous Russian Academy of Arts in St.Petersburg at 19. Several of her works selected for the permanent collection of Academy of Fine Arts Museum. She now lives and works in France. Dongni Hou’s works unfold within a space of silence and inner tension. The human figure often appears fragmented, brushed rather than described, as if suspended between presence and disappearance. The gaze, central to the compositions, acts less as an anchor than as an enigma: it questions, resists, withdraws. The surface is built through layers, allowing traces of gesture, hesitation, and friction to remain visible. This painting does not seek immediate seduction; it advances through restraint and emotional density. Characters seem to carry an intimate memory, sometimes painful, always contained.

Themes of childhood, vulnerability, and identity run through the work without ever becoming narrative. Nothing is explained; everything is suggested. Color, often muted or subdued, functions as an inner climate rather than a setting. Dongni Hou’s painting inhabits an in-between space: between strength and fragility, control and surrender, what is shown and what remains unspoken. It invites the viewer into a slow, almost confidential encounter, where emotion arises precisely from what is left unsaid.
